Yet, beneath the surface of this beauty and vibrancy lies a complex web of social issues that affect the lives of millions.
The State of Major Pressing Social Issues in South Africa and Africa at Large
South Africa and Africa at large are grappling with numerous social issues that affect the well-being and development of their citizens. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the African region bears a disproportionate burden of global poverty, inequality, and disease. South Africa, in particular, faces significant challenges, including high rates of crime, poverty, and unemployment, as well as issues like road safety, healthcare, and inadequate access to education. These social issues are interconnected and can have a devastating impact on individuals and communities.
The social pressing issues in South Africa and Africa at large include, but are not limited to:
1. Road Safety: Road safety is a significant concern in South Africa and Africa, with the countries having some of the highest road death rates globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the African region accounts for a substantial proportion of global road traffic deaths, with South Africa estimating 22.2 deaths per 100,000 people. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) reports that road crashes cost the South African economy R205 billion in 2023, with 11,883 deaths recorded.
Similarly, in Africa, road crashes claim thousands of lives each year, with many more injured or affected.
2. Poverty and Unemployment: Poverty and unemployment are intertwined issues that affect millions of people in South Africa and Africa. The unemployment rate in South Africa stands at 31.9% in Q4 2024, with 32.7% of South Africans (or 7.8 million people) currently without work. In Africa, poverty rates are alarming, with approximately 50% of the population living in poverty. The lack of economic opportunities, inadequate education, and limited access to resources exacerbate these issues.
3. Crime, Violence, and Substance Abuse: Crime, violence, and substance abuse are major concerns in South Africa and Africa, with high rates of reported rape cases, murder, and other violent crimes. Substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol, is a significant contributor to crime and violence, and can have devastating effects on individuals and communities. Over 10,000 rape cases were reported in a single quarter in South Africa, and 957 women were murdered in a three-month period, highlighting the severity of gender-based violence. In Africa, crime and violence are also prevalent, with many countries experiencing high rates of violent crime, human trafficking, and exploitation.

AHBH Foundation NPC was founded by a passionate road safety advocate and communities development social welfare activist, who also founded CG RSA FLASH GATE, a South African registered road safety-based non-profit organisation established in 2018. Its mission revolves around addressing road safety issues to reduce the high rate of road crashes and fatalities in South Africa. Driven by strong faith-based values, our leaders are committed to inspiring hope and creating positive change in the community. As a youth-led organisation, we are dedicated to empowering and inspiring other young people to make a difference, live purposefully, and uphold the value of human life.
The Heart of the Matter: Our Motivation and Deeper Inspiration
Our founder’s experiences have shaped their vision for positive change. Growing up, they witnessed first-hand the challenges of their community, surrounded by major social issues such as poverty, lack of opportunities, and having experienced the harsh realities of living in informal settlements, as well as witnessing road crashes and the loss of a loved one to substance abuse. These experiences have driven them to become a force for good. Through their work, they aim to address pressing social issues, inspire hope, and empower others to live their purpose and make a positive impact.
